Ferrari 488 GTB in Avus Bianco protected with Modesta BC-04 Nano Titanium Glass Coating.

The Ferrari 488 GTB made shockwaves upon its release in 2016, succeeding the iconic 458 Italian and the even rarer 458 Speciale. The looks and the performance of the 488 GTB were striking and otherworldly, boasting impressive performance figures to boot. One of the biggest concerns was the use of a smaller engine with two turbo chargers versus the older naturally aspirated V8 engine in the 458 Italia and Speciale but as many owners and reviewers found out Ferrari didn't disappoint.

The 488 GTB's exterior is incredibly bold, taking cues from the older 458 models and trimming away and refining the overall looks to something aggressive and even sleeker. What we found interesting was the level of detail and time that the individual owner had taken in designing and optioning the car versus another 488 for example; small badges, colour or interior differences and even down to the carpet matts. 

The interior was incredible in another sense. For a supercar, the 488 was almost unbelievably easy to get in and out of. Furthermore the seats were very comfortable and best of the all the fitment and quality had surpassed the Ferrari's of yesteryear. 

Project Detail is a premium detailing studio in North Rocks, Sydney which focusses on delivering bespoke protection services for owners that care for their vehicles. We were fortunate enough to be able to work and provide our services for this Ferrari, choosing Modesta BC-04 for the solid white while maintaining a harder and more scratch resistant glass coating.

Our 21 Stage Wash & Decontamination

We use a pH neutral citrus based 'pre-wash' solution to soak the vehicle before washing starts.

When washing a vehicle of this calibre but also for any vehicle, proper techniques make or break how good the overall finish will be. Many detailers often overlook just how much difference just a 'good' wash can make.

Project Detail utilises a standardised '21 Stage Wash Method' which contains many fail-safes and components which assist in removing as much dirt and debris from the vehicle's surface even before our wash mitts touch the surface. We also utilise hot water between 30-90 degrees in remove and clean the car to another level.

Another core component of our '21 Wash Method' is the hot foam bath.

By taking the time to remove all loose dirt prior to a physical wash, the paint's condition will have the best chance of scratch/swirl free. Light physical defects are caused by friction and the grinding of grit against the surface of the paintwork. If done properly and regularly, by the time the multi-bucket wash and mitts do touch the surface, there shouldn't be any dirt on the car. By installing a good glass coating system like Modesta, this process then becomes even easier.

Once the car is washed properly, only then can we begin the 'decontamination' process. This involves the removal of items embedded into the paintwork that cannot be normally be removed easily by the above mentioned washing techniques. These can include but are not limited to: iron fallout from brake dust and carbon build up, tree sap, other dirt and contamination and pollution, overspray from the general environment.

Traditionally these are removed through the usage of a Clay Bar but modern detailing methods also have chemicals which can dissolve or soften the contamination to be removed safely without scratching the paintwork.

Further Preparation

The slide show shows the car on a hoist with the wheels removed. This allows us to perform a deeper clean of the wheels arches and inspect underneath the Ferrari as well as having a closer look under our lighting.

Closer inspection revealed that all 4 Calipers were worn from the dealership.

Project Detail has specialised equipment to be able to polish even the smallest areas.

One of the things we noticed on this 488, all 4four Yellow optioned brake calipers were all scuffed and this could not be removed with solvents, rubbing alcohol or polished by hand. We used our Rupes TA-50 Air Polisher (also Italian made) with a custom made Microfibre pad and some Modesta C-02 Compound to polish each brake individually. This not only removed the scuff mark but made the brakes deeper and glossier ready for coating.

Modesta BC-06 is a heat and physically resistant coating designed for durability.

Applied to wheels & brakes then IR cured for maximum strength and longevity.

Once the deeper cleaner and the car has been prepared, the paintwork will undergo paint correction, allowing the paintwork to be truly clean and defect free before we proceed to priming and coating the car.

In order to get the best gloss from the Solid White colour while giving a superior hardness and scratch resistance, the owner opted for BC-04 Nano-Titanium Glass Coating. Containing high grade titanium oxide, BC-04 is a hydrophillic coating, installed under wet conditions.

Being a hydrophillic coating, the water bead contact angle is much lower then many hydrophobic coatings but is also more readily able to sheet the water from the surface while also being more resistant to water spotting which can be considered the weakness for many hydrophobic coatings on the market.

Like all Modesta coatings, BC-04 is no different requiring an application of P-01A Primer before hand to give a thick base of special Alkyd Resin for the coating to form a strong bond to give a longer lifespan and increased thickness.

After application, infrared curing is required for the coating to reach full strength. Due to the thickness of Modesta's coatings without infrared curing the coating would take much too long to cure properly and also fail to reach full strength and potentially failing early.

Each panel of the vehicle undergoes the laborious process of infrared curing increasing the strength and lifespan of the coating.

The Finished Product

After days of work, the Ferrari 488 GTB is full coated and protected with an exclusive protection, Modesta by Project Detail. 
The gallery below showcases some of the finishing shots, note the bright and crispness of the paintwork which contrasts how glossy and deep the gloss black, carbon fibre and even the wheels.

Ferrari has truly outdone their efforts in the 458 with the new 488 series. Project Detail has aimed to detail and preserve the finish as befitting a vehicle of this calibre for years to come.

Audi's 5 Cylinder Madness

Audi RS3 Sportsback in Glacier White. Coated by Project Detail with Modesta BC-04 Nano Titanium Glass Coating. We have had the opportunity to maintain this for the owner.

Audi's decision to release the RS3 variant to Australia was well met by car fans in Australia, fitting nicely into the premium and and sitting atop performance hatchback category. The 5 Cylinder was a standout, with owners either keeping them stock or getting mind blowing (and ear piercing) performance with just a few select changes.

Project Detail has been chosen to protect a number of RS3's as an official installer for Modesta Liquid Glass Coatings including this example in Glacier White. The owner had previously had his older vehicles coated in other professional ceramic coatings including Silicon Carbide coatings which he was not happy with their long term performance overall.

Infrared Curing & the right procedures

Project Detail utilises the right equipment in order to provide the right results.

The RS3 underwent a full protection process; paint correction and an application of P01A, and then the BC-04 Coating. We also fully removed the wheels in order to deep clean and spray apply BC-06 Heat Resistant Coating for the wheels and brakes.

Each panel or wheel was then cured with infrared heating lamps in order to finish the curing process. Modesta requires infrared curing in order to achieve the full potential and hardness of the coating.

Even each individual wheel is infrared cured, this ensures that the BC-06 gives long lasting protection.

Ongoing maintenance is another important aspect that many other coating companies neglect. Any coating, even Modesta requires the right care. Just as if one were to purchase a Ferrari, the Ferrari would still require servicing and ongoing care. 

Project Detail can provide this ongoing maintenance for its clients but it also sells a the Maintenance range from Modesta which greatly aids in keeping and getting the most from your coating.

M4 Smoke is a wet applied conditioner designed for your Modesta coating. It preserves and prolongs the water behaviour on the surface of your vehicle.

Project Detail has been maintaining this particular Audi RS3 for over a year, the owner has been very impressed and the car has remained in great condition for a long period of time. Occasionally the car will require more intensive maintenance since it is a white coloured vehicle, areas such as tree sap, tar or iron fall out can be removed through the right detailing techniques preserving the coating underneath.

Jaguar F-Pace in Ammonite Grey Metallic

Jaguar's SUV Entrant

Project Detail Sydney specialises in car detailing and is an official installer for Modesta Glass Coating. This Jaguar F Pace looks spectacular in the afternoon sun, coated in Modesta BC-04.

The Jaguar F-Pace made quite a splash on it's release in 2016, arriving around the same time as two other luxury SUV entrants; the Bentley Bentayga and the Maserati Levante. It's looks were uniquely Jaguar but it managed to transition into a small SUV quite smoothly and carried over it's success in recent years.

This particular F-Pace in Ammonite Grey Metallic was dark and contrasting. The owner came from Mosman, wanting to provide it with an exclusive and effective paint protection. After researching and going through the various options with us, the owner opted for Modesta BC-04 Nano Titanium Glass Coating for its durability and high gloss and additionally Modesta BC-06 for the beautiful two-tone black wheels.

Paint Correction & Priming the Paintwork

A key point of difference to Modesta versus other coating systems available in Sydney, Australia is that Modesta is a complete system. While other coatings have a universal product or just a standalone product, Modesta provides a comprehensive solution offering over 4 types of coatings. Each one has a different chemical makeup and provides a different solution; providing the best results matched for different colours, varying durability and the difference between hydrophillic and hydrophobic.

The car exhibited light swirl marks and light marring after our wash and decontamination process. The F Pace underwent our 21 Stage Wash & Decontamination, making sure it was ready for inspection and paint correction.

Modesta produces a groundbreaking system, starting from quality products like C-02 Compound.

Many clients ask why its necessary to polish and paint correct their new vehicle. There are two major reasons, the first is to remove any light defects that may be leftover from the dealership such as swirl marks and scratches from the mechanics handling the vehicle. Secondly, in order the get the best results, the paintwork must be polished. There is no questioning this, the paintwork never comes from the factory as refined as it can be as it just isn't economical for the dealership.

Modesta P-01A a truly unique product and an integral part of the Modesta System.

Once the paint correction is complete, the final step for a Modesta application is polishing with Modesta P-01A which is the specially designed primer. P-01A is an outstanding finishing polish, able to bring the gloss to an extremely fine level of clarity. In addition, P-01A contains an Alkyd resin which over a few hours binds to the clear coat creating its own coating which is measured between 8-10µm per layer. This product can be layered for additional thickness and compounding gloss.

Finally, the reason why P-01A is an essential step and is that it aids in the installation of the actual coating that is to come. The coating bonds to the Alkyd resin, forming a much stronger and longer lasting result.

BC-04 Nano Titanium Glass Coating

The owners decision to choose BC-04 among the various Modesta coating options was based off the desire for durability and also the prevention of water spotting. In addition to providing a deep gloss and shine on the Ammonite Grey Metallic, BC-04 contains titanium-oxide which adds to the durability of the coating. With a measurable thickness of 2-3μm, BC-04 is also hydrophillic by nature.

Modesta BC-04 is applied under wet conditions, this makes it unique to almost all other coatings. This showcases the chemical makeup and the technology of Modesta is unmatched.

Being hydrophillic, this is key to preventing water spotting long term which is especially prevalent on gun metal shades of colour. The hydrophillic surface allows the coating to 'sheet' the water rather then purely beading like many other hydrophobic coatings available. This allows the coating to better rid of the water which is likely to sit motionless and etch into the surface overtime.

BC-04 is a hydrophillic coating applied extremely thickly under wet conditions. 

Once the coating has cured and has been removed from the surface of the paintwork, the coating continues to cure while leaving behind an unbelievably deep gloss and reflections.

The Importance of Infrared Curing

The Jaguar F Pace's coating undergoes Infrared curing which is critical to Modesta's system.

Infrared curing is becoming more and more prominent to the coatings which exist in Australia. However, Modesta to date is the only one which requires the infrared to be part of its system. The infrared curing causes the solvents in the coating to evaporate faster and greatly accelerates curing but most importantly strengthens the molecular reaction and makes the coating stronger.

Many other coatings are beginning to use these lamps in order to speed up their curing times but unlike Modesta the lamps are purely to speed up the curing and do not affect the chemical reaction.

The entire body, every panel require infrared curing to reach full strength.

BC-06 Heat Resistant Coating

Modesta BC-06 is an excellent investment for all rims and performance brakes.

Modesta has a wide variety of coatings, as aforementioned each coating is specially designed to be different and be able to provide the best protection for its purpose. Modesta BC-06 is a primary example of this. Undergoing years of research, BC-06 is spray applied and coats the receiving surface with a thin layer of PHPS Silica (perhydropolysilazane) which in turn become extremely durable.

Surfaces coated in BC-06 are extremely resistant to heat as the coating is designed to be resistant beyond other coatings in the Modesta range. By providing protection up to 1,300 °C, wheels and brakes are able to stay protected even with long term or extreme use.

In fact, we have had great feedback from clients informing us that the coating has allowed his wheels to be extremely easy to clean post track use.

BC-06 creates a deeper matte finish and increases the gloss for gloss finishes.

Once all the wheels are coated and have dried to the touch, the wheels are then cured with infrared just like the paintwork. For those concerned with how the BC-06 coating will affect their wheels, it is a brilliantly designed product which accentuates the gloss finishes while creating a much deeper and richer finish for matte finishes.

These awesome Jaguar wheels are reinstalled and ready for years of abuse.

Miscellaneous Parts of the Service

All wheels prior to Modesta BC-06 require deep cleaning and preparation.

There are also many little things we do to make sure each installation goes perfect for the client. Deep cleaning the wheels is a core component, because at Project Detail we are able to use our hoists and remove the wheels thoroughly they are then cleaned much more effectively then detailers who are not able to remove the wheels.

In addition, something a little extra we did for this car is remove the Centre Caps, polish them and coat them in Modesta BC-05 for extra pop to give it a little extra effect.

The Final Results

The Jaguar literally had a 'glass like' finish when it was first brought outside.

It's extremely hard to describe how a finished product for Modesta looks and photos rarely do the car justice but Modesta is strikingly glossy. The culmination of all the steps, all the hours going into preparing a car makes it look amazing when it's complete.

Modesta requires 3-4 times the amount of time when compared to other coatings. This is not something extraordinary, but when a product has additional steps and is much thicker as an end result it makes sense that more time must be taken to prepare, install and finish the overall service.

Modesta is also a very exclusive coating, with only 2 applicators per capital city in Australia the approach is vastly different then many other coatings which in the interest of selling products induct as many applicators as possible. Modesta and Project Detail's interest lays specifically in quality and the satisfaction of the client. 

The cost is definitely higher, and our clients appreciate the approach of quality rather than the approach of price matching or cost cutting.

Ferrari 458 Spider in Nero Daytona Metallic

Striking Ferrari 458 Spider

Perhaps one of the most popular models of Ferrari's in recent years has been the 458 coming in a variety of special models; the Italia, the Spider and of course the rare and ultra valuable Speciale.

When this 458 Spider arrived at Project Detail Sydney it was looking dull and the owner wanted the car rejuvenated and for us to reapply PPF to side mirror as it needed replacing and the original PPF job was done through another company. The overall paintwork had swirls and lacked clarity typical signs from regular washing but it was clear the owner cared about the vehicle. 

The car was optioned with a very striking combination, Nero Daytona Metallic paintwork with Gloss Black wheels and yellow brake calipers. While on the inside, it was bedecked with a gorgeous Beige leather option. The interior was slightly worn and had typical body oils and a glossy finish to the leather.

Inspecting & Preparing the Ferrari.

Project Detail inspects every vehicle thoroughly before starting the service. This hopefully detects any anomalies such paint chips, car damage or scratched wheels, anything that may concern the owner as early as possible.

One of the standout features of the Ferrari the vehicle had general wear over all. It wasn't in bad condition but it definitely had not had any regular or standout detailing done in the time the owner had taken the vehicle. The exterior was dirty and there was contamination bonded to the paintwork. The paintwork also showed light to medium swirl marks and marring.

The Interior was not dirty or soiled by any means but being beige leather, a slow build up of body oils, sweat and grim and begun to make the leather look glossy which is not what clean leather looks like.

After inspecting and taking notes on the vehicles, the 458 Spider underwent our 21 stage washing procedure before it was ready for paint correction and further stages of the detail.

Swissvax products represent the pinnacle of car care and the results are oustanding.

One of the major points of difference at Project Detail is the time we spend on each vehicle during it's detail at our Detailing Studio. We are fortunate to not work on too many vehicles per week as we undertake larger projects then most car washes or detailers, this allows us to be extremely thorough. 

Many detailers overlook the importance of the 'wash' stage and simply rush through this step. But a proper wash achieves two things other then a 'clean car.' By properly removing all dirt, debris and contamination, this allows the vehicle to represent it's true self when it comes time to paint correction. Secondly, by washing properly, it actually saves time for the detailer in an efficient manner as nothing needs to be redone or repeated.

Project Detail still prefers the traditional Clay Bar. There are synthetic clay options, such as clay towels or clay pads but the best results we've found the clay bar gives the best results.

Once the vehicle has been washed, decontaminated and thoroughly stripped of any waxes and sealants that may be on the surface, you will find that the water naturally clings to the surface. This raw paintwork has zero affect on water behaviour and would be easily contaminated by dirt of water spotting if left without any product.

Without any products, pure paint will not sheet or bead water. The water will stick to the surface.

Paint Correction & Rejuvenation

Once the vehicle was properly prepared for paint correction, the painstaking process begins polishing each panel individually to remove the defects that would be found on the paintwork. Project Detail uses the newest polishing methods and equipment such as the Rupes Bigfoot System and a combination of the modern style of abrasive polishes and compounds.

Our Specialised detailing studio also has access to 3 scissor hoists. These allow us to work on the lower parts of the car with absolutely no compromise. This means a better finish for your vehicle.
Without these hoists, many detailers need to lie on the ground and this makes it extremely difficult to get the optimum results.

Our expectation is so high that if you have engaged us to perform paint correction, we will guarantee no holograms or buffing marks in the paintwork. But depending on the level of paint correction, we can remove differing levels of defects and scratches in the paintwork.

Paint correction depending on the type of vehicle or the level the client has engaged us can be a very timely process. Usually taking up to a whole day and easily taking several days to complete. The reason for this is to get the best finish, multiple stages of polishing is still required. 

There are many products which some detailers (and even us on the situation) which are claimed to be 'one step' polishes. These marks a major advancement in technology but still lack the refinement of a multi-stage correction.

The Rupes Bigfoot system is also made in Italy. It's good to see Ferrari and Rupes work together.

Application of Swissvax Scuderia

Swissvax Scuderia - Specially designed for softer Italian paintwork. 

Once the paintwork on the 458 Spider was refined and we were happy, the paintwork was then wiped down with a diluted ratio of IPA. This removes any final oils left over from the paint correction compounds and polishes. This also allows one final inspection to make sure we are happy with level of paint correction.

Because the owner opted against applying a glass coating on the paintwork, we chose the best wax suited for the task of making the cars paintwork standout. Swissvax's Scuderia is a handmade and hand poured wax manufactured in Switzerland. With a special blend of fruit oils, carnauba palm wax and other ingredients, Scuderia is specially designed for the softer paintwork on Ferrari's, Alfa Romeo's and Fiat's. We apply this thick paste wax literally by hand. A small portion is massaged into the palms and slowly and gently applied over the paintwork.

It may look like a mess, but the hand application allows a thicker and more even layer of wax.

With high quality waxes such was Swissvax, the wax must be allowed to cure and bond to the surface. In this instance, Scuderia needed 2-3 hours before it began curing and bonding otherwise it would still smudge and not protect the paintwork properly.

PPF Film & Wheels

During the long curing time for the wax, time was taken to finish the other parts of the 458. In particular, the client requested us to redo the PPF Film applied to the mirror as the older film (applied by another company) was lifting and required fixing.

It was during this time, we wanted to highlight the issues with the existing Paint Protection Film applied on the vehicle. Rather than using a properly designed kit which is cut with a plotter, the application has been 'bulk fitted' this means that the PPF was applied in one large piece and completely cut by hand. While this method is acceptable for areas like bonnets, more complex areas like the front bar and especially on a vehicle as complex as a Ferrari 458 Spider, there was a large amount of seems and joins versus a properly designed kit.

The worst part though is the more you cut by hand, the larger the chance there will be cut lines on the paintwork from the blades used. In order to decreases this risk, proper kits should be used in order to maintain both the paintwork and achieve the best finish in safe manner.

We also gave special attention to the wheels of the Ferrari, while normally we would remove and apply a coating such as Modesta BC-06 to the wheels, the wheels were cleaned and treated with Swissvax Autobahn Wheel Wax. This is a wax with a special concentrate of PFTE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) which is more commonly known as Teflon. This provides a slick and heat resistant finish to the wheels which allows easier cleaning and a nice glossy finish for a short period of time. While a wheel wax is fantastic, the heat generated from the brakes and wheels from driving greatly impacts the lifespan of the wax.

Project Detail recommends Modesta BC-06 for Wheels and brakes as it is highly resistant up to 1,300 °C.

The Finished Result

Once the wax was cured, wiping off the excess is always exciting to see the level of finish underneath. The richness and depth of wax is still something that is mind blowing to this day in an era of coatings.

When the Porsche Panamera was first unveiled in 2010, it took quite some time for it's distinctive design to be readily accepted amongst Porsche fans. Those who were looking for daily drivers preferred the ever popular Cayenne and soon after Macan models. However, in more recent years gradual acceptance has built a strong case for the Panamera and Porsche certainly see's it that way by releasing the second generation of the Panamera due to launch in 2017.

The owner of this Panamera was one such Porsche fan having purchased the car without conviction, it wasn't until the unrivalled comfort over long distances combined with a better handling sensation versus his Cayenne that he really fell in love with the large sedan.

Because of this realisation, the owner approached Project Detail in Sydney, Gladesville to detail the vehicle. Paint Correction, interior detailing and paint protection were sought after. The coating of choice was Modesta's flagship coating, BC-05 Advanced Water Repellant Glass Coating. This Option not only provides an extremely effective hydrophobic surface in addition to the iconic 'Candy Like Gloss.'

Inspection & Preparation 

One of the key elements to providing the best possible results is in the inspection and preparation work on any vehicle after the wash and decontamination phase. The Panamera had signs of light holograms possibly from when it was delivered to the owner. Furthermore, although it's quite hard to see in the photos the car did have light to medium swirl marks present which needed to be polished and removed before applying the Modesta coating.

Inspection beforehand lets us see the defects present; swirl marks and buffing holograms.

The inspection is extremely important as it allows the detailer to note down any issues in addition to paint defects, we report any scratches, dents or other would be issues for the owner. The 3 photos in the next slideshow shows a deep scratch on the rear extendable wing & a deep scuff mark both of which will need wet sanding to remove and the general swirl marks on the door.

As we inspect the car, any areas we notice we place a small piece of green tape. This usually represents a deeper scratch or something where we would need to inspect again as we move onto the paint correction phase.

Modesta + Plus Creation Technology

The vehicle is finished inspection and read for paint correction. The green masking tape either protected sensitive areas or is a highlight for potentially troublesome areas worth revisiting.

One of the biggest standout features with Modesta is that it not only has a range of high quality coatings but an entire range of supporting products too. Every single one of these products has passed strenuous research and development phases, which for the installer like Project Detail, we can be assured that the results are going to meet expectations.

Modesta C-02 is a highly specialised cutting compound which allows installers to produce the best results possible compared to other products on the market which contain fillers or oils.

Paint Correction is a specialised form of machine polishing or 'buffing' with a machine. At Project Detail we use a combination of the more current machines in order to produce the expected results, such as the Rupes Bigfoot polishing System or the Flex VRG 3401 forced rotation polisher. Combined with the latest dual action or 'random orbital' machines we also have machines of different sizes and also our set of rotary tools. While rotary tools are less commonly used, it's still a powerful and much needed part of the detailers arsenal.

Paint Correction consists of two main elements; compounding and polishing. Compounding focusses on removal of defects such as swirl marks, light to medium scratches, oxidised paintwork and water spots. Polishing is the secondary phase and this begins to jewel the paintwork to a highly glossy and clear finish rather then removing defects.

On this Porsche Panamera, Modesta C-02 made light work with the swirl marks and light scratches present on the body. This allowed us more time to focus on troublesome areas, like the deep scratches and scuff mark previously show.

Modesta P-01A, BC05 and M1Shot make up just some of the range within the Modesta System.

Once the compounding phase work was completed, we then moved onto the finishing steps using Modesta P-01A. This is Modesta's specialised Primer and in our experience is a truly unique product. Often imitated by other coatings brands, this primer is not only a very effective finishing polishing which leaves the paintwork with extreme clarity and gloss but also contains a special Alkyd Resin coating.

This Resin coating performs two functions, primarily as a bonding agent promoting a stronger catalyst for the incoming glass coating and secondly the Alkyd resin provides a better surface to protect the paintwork during the coating application phase.

BC-05 Advanced Water Repellant Coating

BC-05 is one of the choices of Modesta Coatings, it is a very effective hydrophobic coating.

One of the key differences between Modesta and other coatings we have used previously is the application. Yes, the results are outstanding but the application itself is where the long term results are built. In the past, when we applied other coatings such as professional level ceramic 9h coatings, the process was very straight forward. Easy to apply, wipe on and wipe off and no special curing required. The customer was able to pick their car up within a few hours.

Modesta's coatings in general are much thicker than the competitors for starters, this makes the application process much more tedious and time consuming. Furthermore, the curing time can be extensive even with the aid of infrared curing. The combination for example on this Panamera, of P-01A and BC-05 is a total of 10-15μm versus the other ceramic coatings rating of 0.2-1μm. This is a significant difference which is why Modesta bears the results that it does.

BC-05 is considered the flagship coating for Modesta, highly hydrophobic, extremely thick giving a strong resistance to physical abrasions and chemical etching and finally an unreal level of gloss is attained one the coating is cured.  

Infrared curing is mandatory for Modesta.

It results in a harder and full strength coating.

The Finished Product

The curing process for Modesta is a lengthy and technical process. Many coatings proudly display the use of infrared curing and while the lamps do speed the process dramatically as with Modesta the chemical compound of those coatings do not require infrared curing. Modesta does not reach full strength unless it is cured with infrared, this is an important point of difference versus other coatings. While some may see this as a drawback, the results are the contrary. The end results of a Modesta coated care at full strength is something only the installer and the client will experience.

The Panamera took us 3 days to complete, in addition to body work we also coated the wheels in BC-06 Heat Resistant Hard Glass Coating and also detailed the interior of the Porsche. The owner had chosen a very striking Carrera Red and Black Two Tone finish for the leather. This was deep cleaned and conditioned with Swissvax Elephant Fat (synthetic) and treated with Swissvax Leather Milk.

In addition to the leather treatment, we also steam cleaned all upholstery and carpeting.

The final results of the Porsche Panamera were complete. The vehicle was now rejuvenated to match the owners new found love for the vehicle. From a car bought without much thought to the owners new daily driver replacing his Cayenne, the Panamera now has long term protecting for years not weeks or months.

Bentley Continental GT in Dark Sapphire

Presence, Luxury & Power

Imposing yet elegant, a Bentley always makes a statement.

One of Project Detail's favourite vehicles to date was this 2006 Bentley Continental GT. The paintwork was a deep shade, Dark Sapphire and the interior was a unique scheme between the leather swatches, Saffron Brown and Nautic Blue for a two tone finish. The car was finished in Modesta BC-05 Advanced Water Repellant Glass Coating.

Bentley Continental GT's always have a special presence about them, their size, the long curved panels, the overly powerful but understated engine and the sheer luxury that's expected of the brand. 

The owner had been overseas and the car bad been neglected for a long period of time, rather than use his mobile car detailer he entrusted his Bentley to Project Detail and made the trip from Mosman to our workshop in Gladesville. He was particularly interested Modesta's range of glass coatings as he had encountered them travelling abroad.

Rejuvenating a tired Bentley.

The car had clearly been not washed or detailed for a while. There was contamination and tree sap all over the paintwork.

Because of the sheer size of the Bentley Continental GT, both the interior and exterior required some time in order to gently clean and restore.

The interior was worn and showing the typical signs of body oils and grime, luckily the nappa leather in a Bentley is excellent quality and that allows for the deepest cleaning before rejuvenating.

The exterior had swirl marks, was slightly oxidised paintwork and light marring. What was shocking, there were clearly some panels showing signs of it being repainted; paint runs and areas that required de-nibbing.

Interior & Leather Treatment

Leather was dirty, we cleaned gently and conditioned the leather afterwards.

Using a combination of steam, gentle leather cleaners and the right brushes we slowly worked our way through the leather. We were able to get some good photos illustrating the before and after and showcasing what can be expected. It's important to highlight that when cleaning leather, the better quality of the materials the more likely it can be cleaned and restored back to original condition.

After cleaning, the leather was treated with Swissvax Elephant Fat (synthetic) treatment and then topped with Swissvax Leather Milk. The resulting leather was supple and felt very luxurious.

Exterior & Paint Correction

Due to the age of the Bentley, the paintwork required an extensive amount of polishing and paint correction. We used a combination of Rupes polishers combined with Modesta C-02 Compound which works well on European paintwork, cutting away the paint defects effectively while leaving a relatively high level of gloss compared to other cutting compounds.

These photos showcase the before and after shots during the paint correction process. While these swirl marks may be negligible to some detailers, in order to obtain the highest finish no compromise is taken.

Finishing Polish, priming & Coating

The Dark Sapphire really had an intense glow and looked almost liquid after the paint correction process. We finished the polishing with an application of Modesta P-01A. This finishing polish also contains a special alkyd resin which serves a dual purpose making the Modesta system truly unique.

The alkyd resin takes a few hours to cure and set. Once cured, it allows a better surface for the soon to come coating to bond. This ensures a stronger and longer lasting coating. Secondly, this resin coating (which is measurable between 5-7µm in itself per layer) gives a tactile surface to allow simply for better application. Because Modesta's range of coatings are incredibly thick in comparison to other coating systems, wiping can be difficult in certain temperatures or environments. The P-01A forms a barrier allowing the coating to be removed safer without marring the paintwork.

The finished Bentley definitely attracted attention, it was a shame we couldn't finish the wheels as the owner was sending all 4 away to be refurbished. But as for the interior and exterior, 9 year old car was refreshed for the owner.

Our detailing includes all parts of the vehicle, being a Bentley there are many details parts.

Not cleaning the W12 Twin Turbo Engine would be a shame.

With Modesta BC-05 applied, the Bentley's paintwork naturally has candy like gloss, furthermore it will be much easier for the owner to maintain and wash. Here are some more photos show cashing the finished results.

Mercedes AMG W205 C63S Coupe in Obsidian Black

Power & Precision has a New Look

2016 Mercedes AMG C63S Coupe coated with Modesta BC-03 Pure Glass Coating.

The wait in Sydney for the new AMG coupe's is finally over. With the first allotments finally trickling in, Project Detail has had the opportunity to detail and protect one of the first arrivals in beautiful Obsidian Black with Modesta BC-03 Pure Glass Coating.

The owner having previously had Opti-Coat Pro and Ceramic Pro coatings applied by Richard to their past vehicles was keen to try something new for their new AMG.

 The new Coupe's boast not only a more aggressive look versus the sedan but after speaking to a few clients, we found out there were quite a few changes. Differential setup, exhaust, wider stance and more aggressive flares in the guards to name a few. 

Rectifying Pre-Deliveries Defects & Polishing

Strict preparation & paint correction is needed before coating for the optimum results.

One of the major issues that any decent detailer must face is the prospect of a new car being covered in defects. Educating the client as to why their brand new vehicle requires paint correction can be daunting but it is worthwhile for not only the results but earning the clients trust that you have their best interests at heart.

Modesta P-01A Primer & Polish.

P-01A cures for 3 hours before coating.

This Obsidian Black AMG Coupe was no different. Arriving straight from the dealership, we inspected the vehicle after our 21 Stage Wash & Decontamination to make note of all the various swirl marks, light scratches and random isolated deeper scratches across the paintwork. interestingly, we found the the rear and front bar's in plastic were the worst and as usual the bonnet and drivers door's were trouble areas also.

After P-01A, the gloss and depth is pushed to it's limits before coating with BC-03.

The paintwork was corrected using a combination of Rupes Bigfoot System, Modesta's C-02 Polishing Compound and a variety of pad types. This combination allowed us to fully remove all the defects in the paintwork while leaving a haze and clear finish. Typically, the paint correction stage can take anywhere from 4 hours to a whole entire day to complete depending on a variety of factors such as colour, hardness of paint, how severe the defects are and also the equipment used and the skill of the operator. Project Detail's specialised detailing studio has 3 vehicle hoists which allow us not only better access to the vehicle, it actually speeds up the process when polishing the lower portions and the bumpers.

Once the defects have been removed to our satisfaction, we finish the vehicle with Modesta's Primer & Polish P-01A. This finishing polish is totally unique to Modesta, the gloss and finish it provides is outstanding, the clarity and richness of the colour is always amazing. But what makes P-01A even better is the Alkyd Resin within the polish, this Resin forms a special coating which requires 3 hours to cure and harden on the vehicle.

This Resin coating is the foundation of Modesta's 'Plus Creation Technology' meaning that it can be layered to increase the overall thickness of the coating. P-01A has a measurably thickness of  up to 10μm. Once formed, the resin coating not only protects the paintwork during the difficult installation of Modesta's coating range but also the increases the bond and effectiveness of the coating to come. 

BC-03 Pure Glass Coating

All Modesta coatings must be cured by Infrared in order to reach maximum strength & potential.

Modesta is a unique coating and protection system in the fact is has over 6 different types of coatings. Many other brands hail a universal coating for all paint types but this approach isn't logical. With so many paint finishes, some vehicles being used as daily drivers and others for weekend use only, Modesta has a range of coatings designed to suit all these different applications.

Modesta BC-03 Pure Glass Coating is all but one in the Modesta Range of coatings.

BC-03 is a Pure Glass Coating that is Hydrophilic in nature. This means it is the polar opposite of the majority of the coatings on the market that are Hydrophobic by nature. With 'phobia' meaning a fear of and 'philic' meaning to love, Modesta's BC-03 Pure Glass Coating and BC-04 Nano Titanium Glass Coating provides a out of the box approach to the water spotting problems that plague many other coatings on the market. 

As the coating is cured with the Infrared lamp, the gloss really begins to show.

BC-03 & BC-04 are also unique as they are both applied under 'wet' conditions. Due to their hydrophilic nature, the application is done with a lot of water involved. This is very different to other coatings because getting most coatings wet during the application is a big problem causing hazing, seizing up the coating and early product failure.

By being Hydrophilic, the water naturally sheets off the surface of the vehicle. This means that while the water beads may not be as pronounced and as visually impressive as a hydrophobic coating, the flat panels such as roofs, bonnets and boots are more resistant to water spotting.

Further more, BC-03 Pure Glass Coating gives an immense gloss to the surface it's coated in, providing a wet and candy like gloss and when combined with P-01A the overall result is simply mind blowing. BC-03 has a measurable thickness of 2-3μm. This means that when combined together with P-01A, the overall thickness is between 10μm+

BC-06 Heat Resistant Hard Glass Coating 

Protecting the paintwork is only one part of the application process for this AMG. The wheels and brakes were removed and deep cleaned before having a spray application of BC-06. This highly durable coating is spray applied through a HVLP (high volume low pressure) gun, allowing for an even and smooth application.

BC-06 also protected brake callipers keeping them bright and from discolouration.

BC-06 was engineered to be resistant of temperatures up to 1,300 °C. This makes it not just the coating of choice but a necessity for performance brakes and wheels. During the application process, we coat not only the face of the wheel but also the barrel. This gives the car overall better cleaning ability, as well as better aesthetics. Gloss wheels pop while matte/satin finishes become very rich and velvety.

Like with all Modesta coatings, after application, curing with Infrared is a necessity.

BMW's M Division has established itself amongst all the German tuning houses as a top contender when it comes to performance versus capabilities of their vehicles. Project Detail Sydney has had the pleasure of working on a few BMW M Division vehicles, but one that we want to share is this gorgeous M4 Coupe in Mineral Grey.

The owner was unsure of how long the vehicle would be kept but definitely felt that the car looked tired and needed a luxurious way to reviving the finish. One of the major issues with the vehicle, due to city parking the  car was covered in a lot of overspray, industrial fall out and also mineral deposits. After consulting and looking at the various options, the owner opted for our Swissvax Detail

The BMW M4 responded really well, and after a single stage of Correction, the car was beginning to glow. The carbon fibre roof especially looked especially stunning as the defects and slight oxidisation were removed.

Carnauba Wax gives a warm and deep Gloss versus a glassy gloss from sealants.

Out of the 3 major German manufacturers, BMW utilises a proprietary clear finish on their modern vehicles called 'Ceramiclear,' this paintwork is notoriously difficult to work with due to its physical hardness. While it is very beneficial for the owner, when the paintwork does require polishing and paint correction, the process can take 30-40% longer then on a Mercedes Benz or an Audi.

One of the downsides of having such a hard clear is that finish is simply not as glossy versus other types of paint. Swissvax Blau-Weiss is designed to bring out the best of the gloss while providing long term quality protection for the vehicle.

The benefits of a rich, quality carnauba wax is the warmth and the glow is very distinctive. Many people even with glass coatings prefer to finish with a carnauba wax in order to get the warm finish in their paintwork.

BMW M2 Sapphire Black

Project Detail was fortunate enough to detail and protect one of the first BMW M2 Coupe's to be delivered to the country. Painted in beautiful Sapphire Black, the newest M Division car certainly doesn't disappoint on any level; performance, looks and quality.

For the M2, the customer wanted give the car the best protection possible in order the preserve the looks after with finished the paint correction process. We spent a total of 3 days working on the vehicle, beginning with our 21 stage wash & decontamination and the 2 stages of paint correction.
After we were happy with paintwork, we applied CS2 Titanium ceramic quartz glass coating to the paintwork. We also coated the wheels, brakes and the windscreen with CS2 range of protection products.

BMW - Designed for Driving Pleasure

The CS2 Titanium took 8 hours overnight to fully cure before it is water contact ready. In that time we finished detailing the last components such as polishing the exhaust tips, coating and protection the interior and applying CS2 Clearvue to the exterior windscreens.

CS2 carries a wide range of interior coatings that allowed us to protect the leather, vinyl, matte carbon finish and also the upholstery.

We were very happy with the results and the client was extremely satisfied when he received his car. Overall, the car took longer than usual due to the hard ceramiclear finish on BMW paint but the results speak for themselves.

Aston Martin DB9

Our Project Detail Melbourne Studio recently restored an iconic Aston Martin DB9, performing full paint correction and applying CS2 Ceramic Glass Coating to finish.

Our loyal client recently has purchased this car from a dealership and before it was delivered, unfortunately it was handed to their team of detailers and they did not do a very good job.

A Quality Iron Remover in Action.

From a distance, it certainly looks great because it has been freshly waxed from the dealership. Wax temporarily hides imperfections, also wax gives a very warm carnauba finish. Especially on black cars. But however after it went through our 21-Stage Wash and Decontamination, the true finish of the car started to show. Swirl marks and holograms showed up.

For every car that comes into project detail, we use latest techniques and polish thoroughly using combinations of fluorescent, halogen, LED and sunlight to properly and safely remove imperfections on your paintwork because certain setting of lighting are able see certain imperfections. Using the combination of all, we are able to view the actual condition of the paintwork and take the right approach of polishers, pads, chemicals and technique. 

For this Aston Martin, it went though a combination of Stage 1 and Stage 2 Paint Correction. On some panels, the defects are bad while on some panels they only require a Stage 1 Paint Correction.

We took 15 Hours to complete the paint correction process to reach to the level where we are happy with it before starting the CS2 Ceramic Application.

Final Results are phenomenal, even every time we stand back and look at it, we are genuinely impressed by the results!

Porsche 997 911 Carrera 4S

A German Icon Restored 

We seem to be biased towards Porsche car detailing at Project Detail, while that may or may not be true, it is undeniable that the 911 has been an icon for the Zuffenhausen Company. In fact, it has been argued that the shape has very much become a 'brand' in itself that represents the precision behind Porsches success. 

We spent over a week working on this Porsche 997 911 Carrera 4S. The new owner had commissioned us to restore the interior, wheels, engine and paintwork to the highest degree.

To illustrate just how much time we spent on this particular Porsche, we've decided to make this article a bit longer then than normal. Thank you and we absolutely appreciate your patience in reading and viewing about our work.

The 997 911 Carrera 4S, glossy and finished outside our Studio in Gladesville, Sydney.

As with most Porsches, they strike an emotional chord with their owners that seem to see them adore and wanting their cars looking their absolute best. This particular 911 Carrera had been washed incorrectly in its lifetime which unfortunately meant the paintwork was extremely dull and was covered in medium to heavy swirl marks and other paint defects.

Like all the Porsches we have worked on, they require an incredible amount of time in order to polish all the curves and make sure the hard German paint is corrected properly in order to show the real colour of the car.

Washing, Decontamination & Drying

In order to begin the process of detailing any major project, we need to be able to assess the vehicle thoroughly in order to decide how to appropriately approach the car. Our 21-stage wash is already drastically different from most car washes or even some detailers. It includes the use of a citrus pre-wash soak, Iron Ferrous Remover, snow foam, multiple grit guard buckets and the luxury of hot water.

After the wash the vehicle is then decontaminated; Iron Fallout, Tar, Tree sap and other contamination is removed from the surface. This contamination cannot be removed during the wash process.

Project Detail Sydney & Melbourne uses a mixture of Microfibre drying towels, Waffle weave towels and air blowers to dry the car after the wash. This way, no water is still present during inspection and especially during the paint correction phase.

Only once the vehicle is washed, decontaminated and dried properly we can begin assessment of the vehicle. This way none of the dirt, dust or contamination can affect the appearance of the paintwork. The inspection is done under a mixture of LED, fluorescent and halogen lights in order for us to see all the scratches, swirl marks and paint defects and make notes regarding the car as we progress.

The photo's in the gallery illustrate the poor nature of the paint beforehand. Heavy Swirl marks were consistent and present all over the paintwork. The paintwork itself was dull and lacked clarity and depth.

In order the rectify these issues, we needed to proceed with intensive paint correction to remove all the defects and bring gloss back to the car.

Two Stage Paint Correction

Paint Correction is the technical term Project Detail uses to describe the machine buffing and polishing process. Paint Correction is a time consuming task which often means it can can day and sometimes weeks to achieve the perfect finish. To find out more about Paint Correction, click here.

This polishing process involves using a series of machines which slowly polishes the surface using abrasives which flatten the surface until the defects disappear overtime. From the photos, the depth and metallic flakes really begin to stand out.

Paint Correction begins with a more aggressive product called a compound, these contains abrasive materials which allow us to remove the swirl marks and scratches. This process can take hours depending on the severity of the defects and also the hardness of the paintwork. For example, most German cars using extremely hard paintwork versus the soft spongy paint from Japan.

Because Project Detail specialises in the correction of high end vehicles, we have access to a variety of tools which allows us to work in finer areas which would be out of reach normally. Our Rupes TA-50 is a team favourite, allowing us to polishing the smallest areas with ease.

After the first stage of compounding, the paint correction continues to move towards refining the paintwork with finer polishes with more delicate abrasives. These allow the paintwork to begin to take its glossy finish. The fine polishes also allow any haziness or dullness from the first stage to be removed.

After many hours of paint correction, the car begins to resemble the finished product. The paintwork becomes extremely glossy reflecting the surrounding objects in our workshop. Only by spending the appropriate time in can you avoid costly mistakes such as buffing marks or holograms. You can find out more about the perils of cheap and quick buffing

The Porsche is then washed a second time to remove compound dust and debris that naturally collects during the paint correction process. This also gives the chance to clean rubber seals, remove masking tape and prepare the car for the application of the glass coating.

The defects and the swirl marks are now permanently removed. They will only return in the form of new scratches but with the right protection coating and care the car can stay looking great for a long time.

The vehicle then undergoes one of the final procedures. CS2 Titanium is a top tier, 2 part glass coating which gives great physical resistance, superior water beading and an intense gloss to the car's it's applied to. The curing time varies depending on the weather but normally we allow 7-8 over night to let the product become ready.

The final elements of the detail are finished at this stage including, any wheel detailing or coating, exhaust polishing etc. This Porsche also had it's interior detailed and also the wheels removed and coated giving it the long term protection it needs.

Recently, our Project Detail studio in Melbourne finished working on a brilliant Jaguar XE R-Sport. Coming straight from the dealership to Project Detail, we were able to offer the customer top tier protection products that he would be satisfied with.

The Jaguar XE R-Sport under went a stage 1 paint correction and opted for our  CS2 Ceramic glass coating.

To majority of the people, or car owners would think a brand new car's paintwork would be in flawless, perfect condition. By rights it should be but unfortunately, the economics of the car dealerships mean that they are unable to spend the appropriate time or use better equipments and products to produce the finishes customers often demand.

This often means that the car you are dreaming of or have just purchased, goes through a 'pre-delivery' process which more often then not, leaves light swirl marks and scratches on the cars surface. This is due to wiping of dust, removal of the protective vinyl when it leaves the factory or even the poor quality last minute detail before you pick up the vehicle. In fact the boldest statement we make to owners of new cars, is we will make your car look better then when you picked it up.

Toby and the team went through our 21-Stage wash and decontamination, after putting the vehicle on our LED inspection lights, just as we expected the paintwork has very light swirl marks and marring.

Whilst very light, it does affect the finish especially on a new car.

The polishing itself took approximately 10 hours to complete. Using Rupes Bigfoot system combined with products like Scholl Concepts or Menzerna we painstakingly polish each panel to remove these light defects. 

Because of the permanent nature of the glass coatings we apply, any defects that are not removed prior to application will remain under the coating. Only by using abrasives and polishing off the coating at a later date would allow their removal.

Once the paintwork was polished to a level we were satisfied with, we can finally begin the coating process and finishing areas like the wheels (barrel and face) and any other area the customer has requested.

Ferrari F430 Spider

A Ferrari is always a special occasion to a detailer. In Sydney, we are fortunate enough to be able to see these works of art come by occasionally. Project Detail's specialised detailing workshop allows us to perform customised services for supercars and specialised vehicles alike.

Project Detail is located in Gladesville, near Hunters Hill which is accessible to most of Sydney. Our 3 vehicle hoists allow to detail supercars that may be hard to detail due to their height or requiring removal of wheels that are very expensive. We also utilise a hot water pressure washer, allowing us a more thorough wash that cannot be achieved without one. Project Detail is aiming to provide your car with a service unmatched in Sydney.

Our goal is to make these cars look amazing, allowing their busy owners to smile when they take time from their busy schedules to drive these cars they have worked hard for. If we can achieve that, then we have accomplished what we aim for which is beyond detailing.

The wash, decontamination and prep takes hours before any polishing even begins.

Project Detail was able to meet the strict requirements of the owner of this Ferrari F430 Spider in the classic Ferrari red 'Rossa Corsa.' These requirements were:

  • Perfectly Corrected Paintwork
  • Touchups for stonechips on front bar, front quarters and bonnet
  • Restore cream leather interior 
  • Find solution for cracking & peeling black paint in door jambs
  • Apply the best Paint Protection available

Our work on the F430 took us a whole week to complete before we were satisfied before presenting the car to the customer. The existing paintwork was mediocre condition. It was cared for by all of it's owners, however the paintwork still needed 2 stages of polishing in order to remove all the defects. The soft nature of Ferrari paintwork meant there was a lot of consistent swirl marks and 'random isolated deep scratchs' or RIDS.

The paintwork also showed signs of light oxidisation which is perfectly normal for the age of the car and also being red paint. Surprisingly the interior was in good condition, the leather was slightly dirty but the two parts that were worth noting about the interior include the black rubber coating for all interior buttons and the carbon fibre on the back of the seats. The owner did not want them removed, so polishing them properly was impossible.

For the paint correction required an extensive 2 stages, this was painstaking as we made sure we polished all the contours, small vents and only on the hoist were we able to polish the low side skirts properly. We used a combination of Rupes polishing machines and Scholl Concept polishes which are manufactured in Italy and Germany respectively. This allowed us to produce the top tier results we were after. 

One important element often overlooked by carwashes and detailers is the requirement to have quality tools, chemicals and products. Just like the Ferrari, Lamborghini's or Porsche's quality can only be achieved sometimes with a higher cost. We do not compromise at Project Detail, only the focus of quality is important.

A particular nuisance areas of many convertibles or Spider supercars is the rub marks left behind by the soft top sitting on top of the paintwork. Fortunately with the right tools, these can be polished and removed revealing the glossy original paintwork.

After correction, the vehicle was coated with CS2's Black Edition coating. Black Edition is a bespoke coating that is only created for specific detailers in each country. Project Detail is privileged enough to be able to apply this to only to the best cars and where the customers demand the best.

CS2's Black Edition is a very difficult product to apply, however the results are outstanding. It has an extremely high percentage of SiO2 (Silicone Dioxide.) The gloss is undeniably deep and wet. The long term benefits become apparent to the owner as after each wash, the car looks freshly detailed. The coating beads so aggressively that the water literally falls off the surface, these attributes allow the car to preserve it's looks and look extra special when these busy owners take them for a drive.
